The Albuquerque Northeast Lions Club are proud to take on the Helen Keller 2.0 Challenge!

Helen Keller inspired Lions to become the “Knights of the Blind.” As we look toward the next 100 years of service, we are continuing that legacy by supporting students who are blind or have low vision through our Backpacks for the Blind project. Every year, communities collect school supplies for children, but one group is often overlooked.

Our Backpacks for the Blind project provide students with specialized Braille materials, accessible school supplies, and vision-impaired resources designed to help them throughout their school years. The approximate cost to fill one backpack is $200. While some supplies may need to be replenished as students’ progress through school, our goal is to make sure these students have the tools they need to learn, participate, and succeed.

We are excited to introduce this initiative throughout New Mexico. Our first school district, Rio Rancho Public Schools, has been completed. Special Thanks to Lion Joanna Jones (ABQ NE). If you know of a school district or any school that has students who could benefit from these backpacks, please let us know. We want to add them to our list and reach as many students as possible.

Help Us Fill a Backpack!  We are selling tickets to help raise funds for this important project. The drawing will take place on November 14th, 2026, at the Mid-winter conference.

Can't attend the meeting? No problem! If you would like tickets, please give me a call Lion Annie 505-264-6208, I would be happy to mail tickets to you or your club.

Together, We Can Continue Helen Keller's Legacy
