Helen Keller 2.0 Challenge Accepted by ABQ NE Lions

Dear Lions,

Have you heard about the Helen Keller 2.0 Challenge? It represents celebrating the next 100 years of Helen Keller who started the  "Knights of the Blind."

The ABQ NE Lions are in for the challenge, and we will be supporting Backpacks for the Blind. Everyone donates supplies for school children, but people often forget that blind and low-vision kids need supplies too.

Our backpacks provide Braille items and vision-impaired supplies for students that will last through their school years. The cost to fill one pack runs about $200.00. While some items might need to be replenished over time, keeping these students supplied is exactly what our project is all about.

We are looking to introduce this initiative to New Mexico. So far, the Rio Rancho school district is completed, with 15 backpacks ready to go for the upcoming school year. Next is Albuquerque, and then Santa Fe as we work our way around the state. If you feel your school district has a need, please let us know so we can add them to the list.

We are selling tickets to help support this cause. I will have tickets and a backpack on display at our first cabinet meeting in Moriarty. The drawing will not take place until our second cabinet meeting, so there is plenty of time to spread the word and support the cause.  If you are not attending the meeting and want tickets, please give me a call and I can mail some tickets out to you or your club.
