Celebrating a very successful Mardi Gras/Valentine fundraiser Feb. 14, Sandia Mountain Lions Club was pleased to join with Moriarty Lions Club with members of both cooperating for the event. We are grateful for support from the community, neighboring Edgewood Lions Club, and District 40 Governor Frankie Davis. All proceeds with help both Clubs support community and international Lions projects.
Also celebrating our Peace Poster winner Haven Cook, an eighth grader at Roosevelt Middle School in Tijeras. Judged tops in our District, her poster was also chosen a Merit Award winner in the Lions International Peace Poster Contest, giving her recognition at LCI headquarters, in The Lion Magazine and at the 2026 LCI Convention, as well as a $500 check. It was only five years ago that another Roosevelt student's poster was also judged one of the 23 Merit Award winners out of the some 600,000. created worldwide in about 65 countries.
Sadly, there were only a few posters submitted for District judging here in 2025. We would like to encourage every one of the Lions Clubs under our Governor to sponsor a Peace Poster Contest in the coming fiscal year. A Project Chair has only has to get a school or community youth group to agree, order a PP Kit from LCI, work with the teacher/leader, provide poster paper, post the rules, judge the artwork and submit the winner's poster to the DG. Sandia Mountain Lions traditionally hold a pizza party in January for the top three winners and families, with total project cost about $250 for 80 students. There is also a separate LCI contest for a youth's essay on peace. Both are excellent ways for community service and publicity, and to fill our service component for young people.
