PMS Cottonwood Head Start

Farmington Evening Lions Club received an email from Presbyterian Children’s Services (PMS) to any party that would be interested in helping them set up the gardening project.  PMS had received a grant to start this project.  Farmington Evening expressed an interest and has partnered with Presbyterian Children’s Services (PMS) to begin a garden project to teach the children in their program how to plant and raise a garden.  It was decided that it would begin at their Cottonwood facility. Lion Matt took up the gauntlet and worked with Lion Wesley to begin the process.

Lion Matt met with PMS on May 20, 2026 to make a plan to start building the planter boxes (beds) necessary for the children to learn about growing their own food.  On May 29th Lion Matt, Lion Rachel and Lion Wesley met with PMS to discuss the area where they would be set up and to determine what size it could hold, this the size and number of planters needed.

June 1st, Lion Matt picked up the lumber.  Lion Matt, Lion Rachel and Lion Wesley began building them in his garage on June 2nd and completed them on June 3rd, with the help of Lion Matt’s family who sanded the boxes.  There were 6 beds built: 4-foot-wide X 7 foot long and 18 inches high.

On June 8th, Lion Matt and his family delivered the planters to PMS Cottonwood.

On June 10th and 11th, the boxes were filled with 8 yards of compost.  The volunteers were Lion Matt, Lion Gordon, Lion Wesley, Lion Matt’s sons: Matt Jr. and Adrian, along with prospective member, Sheldon Montoya.

On June 19th, Shannon with PMS Cottonwood emailed pictures of the plants in the garden beds.  See below.

The kids are so excited.  This has been a very rewarding experience for all of us in the Farmington Evening Lions Club!!!  It is also a great opportunity to Serve our community.  We look forward to continuing this project with PMS at their numerous facilities!
